Biography & Career

Kamiya Jani was born on 25 May 1988 in Mumbai to Mohan Jani, a businessman, and Poonam Jani. Her family has Gujarati roots, with her grandfather Naraindas Jani having moved to India from Pakistan during Partition. She grew up in Mumbai alongside an elder brother, Tarun, and a sister, Payal.

For her education, Jani pursued a Bachelor’s degree in Mass Media from R.D. National College before going on to earn an LLB from G.J. Advani Law College, both in Mumbai - an unusual academic combination for someone who would go on to build a media empire around food and travel rather than law.

Jani’s journey into journalism began early. She joined The Times of India in February 2006, before moving to CNBC-TV18 as a correspondent and sub-editor the same year. Her broadcast career then took her to Bloomberg UTV, where she spent two years anchoring and producing lifestyle, travel, and entertainment segments, followed by a stint at ET Now as a financial markets anchor and travel anchor for MagicBricks Now. After roughly a decade in mainstream television news, Jani grew restless with the routine of early-morning broadcasts and began looking for a space that didn’t yet exist in Indian media — one built entirely around local discovery, food, and travel. In 2016, she quit her corporate job and launched Curly Tales, initially documenting her own travels and culinary experiences and posting them on Facebook. The response was immediate and strong. What began as personal video diaries evolved into a full-fledged digital platform, and by 2017 Curly Tales had found its footing as a dedicated food-and-travel content brand. Today, headquartered in Mumbai with a team of more than 20 people, Curly Tales has grown into India’s leading discovery platform in the category, commanding a following of over 4+ million subscribers on YouTube and more than 5 million on Facebook. Jani herself became the face of the brand, most notably through “Sunday Brunch,” her interview series where she hosts actors, entrepreneurs, and public figures over meals - blending celebrity conversation with food and lifestyle storytelling in a format that has become one of Curly Tales’ signature offerings. Achievements Jani’s rise as a content entrepreneur has been recognised across the industry: • 2018: Top Social Influencer of the Year, Upper Story • 2019: The Most Influential Content Marketing Professional, World Marketing Congress Awards • 2022: Best Food Influencer of the Year, Exhibit Magazine She has also been a public speaker, including a 2018 TEDx appearance at NIT Srinagar, and has walked the ramp as a showstopper at Bombay Times Fashion Week for the UNIMO initiative celebrating mothers.

Kamiya Jani is married to Samar Verma, whom she met during her first job as a finance writer at CNBC. The two dated on and off before reconciling permanently, and are now parents to a daughter, Ziana Verma. The couple also shares their home with a pet dog named Leo. Outside of work, Jani has spoken about her fondness for pani puri, her admiration for Rhonda Byrne’s The Secret, and her love of travelling to destinations like Goa, Lisbon, the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, and Kerala.
