How 'Tandoor' Gave Nivedita Basu's Directorial Career a Second Wind

Mumbai: Some projects go beyond being just another line on a resume - they become the moment everything changes. For director Nivedita Basu, that project was Tandoor. Made during the depths of the pandemic lockdown, the series didn't just mark her return to direction - it kicked off an entirely new phase of her career in the OTT space.

Pulling it off wasn't easy. With a skeleton crew, strict safety protocols, and the everyday uncertainty that came with shooting during a lockdown, finishing Tandoor was as much a feat of logistics as it was of storytelling.

That effort didn't go unnoticed. The series went on to earn nominations at the Filmfare OTT Awards across some of the night's biggest categories - Best Series, Best Actor, and Best Actress among them.

For Basu, the project carried a personal weight too. It reunited her with longtime friends Tanuj Virwani and Rashami Desai, while her work alongside Chitra Vakil Sharma and Chandni Soni grew into what she describes as a genuine creative partnership. The show's music also played a central role in shaping its identity.

"Tandoor wasn't just my OTT debut - it was a homecoming to the craft I trained in and always loved," Basu says. "The lockdown pushed all of us to our limits, but it also proved something important: great stories don't come from comfort and convenience. They come from conviction, passion, and sheer dedication."

In the end, Tandoor stands as proof that even the toughest circumstances can't dim a good story - or the people determined to tell it.
