Sayani Gupta's Directorial Debut 'Aasmani' Soars Across Global Film Festivals

Sayani Gupta is having a moment - and this time, it's not for what she's acting in, but what she's created. The actress has stepped confidently behind the camera with her directorial debut Aasmani, and the short film is already making waves on the international festival circuit.

Over the next two months, Aasmani will screen at ten festivals spread across the US, Canada, Japan and India. The selections read like a dream run for a first-time director: the Washington DC South Asian Film Festival, Tokyo International Short Film Festival, India International Film Festival of Boston, Chicago South Asian Film Festival, and Atlanta International Film Festival are all on the roster, with more names expected to join the list.

Closer home, the film has found equally warm reception. It's been picked for the short film competition at IDSFFK in Kerala, and earlier bagged a spot in the India Competition at the Bengaluru International Short Film Festival. Four more festival announcements are reportedly in the pipeline.

The accolades have already started rolling in too. At the 59th WorldFest-Houston, Aasmani walked away with the REMI Special Jury Award and the Best Children/Family Film honour - no small feat for a debut project.

What's drawing audiences in, though, isn't the festival buzz but the story itself. Written and directed by Gupta, Aasmani follows the quiet, moving bond between a grandmother and granddaughter, with a powder-blue car as an unlikely companion to their journey through love, loss and friendship. It's a small, intimate story - but one that's clearly striking a chord well beyond borders.

If Aasmani's festival run proves anything, it's that a story doesn't need scale to travel far. Sometimes, honesty and simplicity are enough to make it universal.
