Some performances outlive the artist who gave them. For actor Mukul Dev, who passed away in May 2025, that performance has arrived in the form of “Udta Teer,” the spy comedy starring Ayushmann Khurrana and Sara Ali Khan that opened in theatres on October 23.

The film’s special screening in Mumbai drew a notable crowd from the industry, including Sanya Malhotra, Saba Ali Khan Pataudi, Sharib Hashmi, Shreya Chaudhary, Varun Sood and Harleen Sethi, alongside Mukul’s brother Rahul Dev and his partner Mugdha Godse. For the two of them, the evening carried a weight the rest of the audience couldn’t fully share - watching Mukul on screen for what both knew was the last time.

Speaking afterward, Rahul Dev reflected on his brother’s posthumous appearance in the film, noting that Mukul never failed to captivate audiences with his performances. In the film, Mukul plays Azhar Maqsood, a pivotal character central to the story.

The tribute extended beyond family. At the trailer launch, Ayushmann Khurrana himself remembered Mukul as one of the country’s most brilliant talents and described “Udta Teer” as a heartfelt remembrance of the actor, recalling their earlier collaboration on the 2018 film “Omerta.”

Mukul Dev, who died in May 2025, had actually shot “Udta Teer” back in 2024 - meaning it was completed before his death, not after, despite earlier reports suggesting “Son of Sardaar 2” would be his final film. The film is directed by debutant Akash A Kaushik. It is produced by Dharma Productions and Sikhya Entertainment, with Karan Johar among its producers.

Mukul Dev passed away on May 23, 2025, at the age of 54 in New Delhi following a brief illness, and is survived by his daughter, Siya Dev, and brother Rahul. His death came as a shock to an industry that had watched him build a career spanning nearly three decades, from his television debut to a string of memorable film roles.

For those who knew him best, “Udta Teer” has become something more than a film release - it’s a chance to see him once more, animated and unguarded, doing what he loved. As the lights dimmed at the special screening, Rahul and Mugdha weren’t just watching a movie. They were saying goodbye, one more time, to someone they still haven’t fully let go of.
