The voice that gave music to the whole world is now fighting to hear it: Nidhi Vasandani on Alka Yagnik
Singer Alka Yagnik opened up about living with a rare sensory neural hearing condition for two years, sharing her story shortly after being honoured with the Padma Bhushan.
Legendary playback singer Alka Yagnik has revealed that she has been quietly battling a rare and irreversible hearing condition for the past two years - a health struggle she chose to keep private until now.
The disclosure came just after Yagnik received one of India's highest civilian honours, the Padma Bhushan. Soon after the ceremony, the singer took to social media to share what had really been going on behind the scenes, prompting an emotional response from fans and fellow artists alike. Journalist Nidhi Vasandani discussed the singer's health update in a recent segment on her YouTube channel, The Nidhi Vasandani Show.
According to Yagnik's own account, the onset was abrupt. She said her hearing suddenly began to fail shortly after stepping off a flight, with little warning beforehand. Doctors later diagnosed her with sensory neural hearing loss, a condition that damages the nerves and hair cells inside the inner ear responsible for transmitting sound. Once these cells are damaged, they typically do not regenerate, making the hearing loss largely permanent.
