The voice that gave music to the whole world is now fighting to hear it: Nidhi Vasandani on Alka Yagnik

Legendary playback singer Alka Yagnik has revealed that she has been quietly battling a rare and irreversible hearing condition for the past two years - a health struggle she chose to keep private until now.

The disclosure came just after Yagnik received one of India's highest civilian honours, the Padma Bhushan. Soon after the ceremony, the singer took to social media to share what had really been going on behind the scenes, prompting an emotional response from fans and fellow artists alike. Journalist Nidhi Vasandani discussed the singer's health update in a recent segment on her YouTube channel, The Nidhi Vasandani Show.

According to Yagnik's own account, the onset was abrupt. She said her hearing suddenly began to fail shortly after stepping off a flight, with little warning beforehand. Doctors later diagnosed her with sensory neural hearing loss, a condition that damages the nerves and hair cells inside the inner ear responsible for transmitting sound. Once these cells are damaged, they typically do not regenerate, making the hearing loss largely permanent.

Footage from the Padma Bhushan ceremony added weight to her revelation. Viewers noted that Yagnik appeared visibly frail and seemed to require support while walking up to receive the award, a stark image for a performer known for decades of powerhouse vocals.

The news lands heavily given the scale of Yagnik's career. Over more than three decades in playback singing, she has recorded upward of 21,000 songs across 25 languages and lent her voice to over 1,000 films, earning two National Film Awards along the way. Her global reach was formally recognised by Guinness World Records, which named her the most-streamed singer on YouTube for three consecutive years - 2020, 2021 and 2022 - putting her ahead of international heavyweights like Taylor Swift, BTS and Blackpink on the platform.

For a voice that has soundtracked generations of Indian cinema, the diagnosis has struck an emotional chord nationwide, with fans and well-wishers now hoping for her recovery and continued strength.
