"Music Never Left Me": Anand Raaj Anand on Revisiting Welcome's Iconic Sound

Nineteen years is a long time in Bollywood. Trends shift, stars rise and fall, and yesterday's chartbusters get buried under an avalanche of new releases. Yet here's the remarkable thing about "Uncha Lamba Kad" - it never really went away.

The song, composed, written and sung by Anand Raaj Anand for the 2007 blockbuster Welcome, has quietly lived on in reels, playlists and collective memory long after the film's theatrical run ended. Now, with Welcome to the Jungle arriving as the franchise's third installment, the track is back - recreated, reimagined, but unmistakably itself. Anand Raaj Anand returns as singer, this time joined by Rubai.

"The title Welcome itself feels like a signature in my life," Anand says, his voice carrying the warmth of someone genuinely moved by the reception. "It's almost as if people are saying, 'Anand, you're back.' I am overwhelmed by the love I have received - far more than I had imagined."

A Midnight Call That Became History

The origin story of "Uncha Lamba Kad" is the kind of anecdote that belongs in a Bollywood documentary. Anand recalls receiving an urgent call around midnight from the Welcome team - they needed three songs in just 15 days. No pressure, no rehearsal, just deliver.

He delivered. "Those songs eventually became history," he says simply. "Uncha Lamba Kad and Honth Rasiley continue to be loved even today."

The fact that a song born out of a midnight deadline is still soundtracking Instagram reels nearly two decades later says something about instinct - that certain melodies find their audience and simply refuse to leave.

Never Really Gone

Ask Anand whether this moment represents a comeback and he'll gently push back on the framing.

"I don't think I ever went away," he says. "I was simply in a creative zone rather than an execution zone. Music never left me, and neither did my passion for it. This phase feels like a natural continuation of my journey."

It's a distinction worth sitting with. The industry may have moved on without him in the headlines, but by his own telling, the music kept happening - just quietly, away from the spotlight.

Gratitude, Legacy and the Khiladi Connection

Anand is generous in crediting the team that chose to bring the song back. "I feel extremely grateful to Akshay Kumar and the entire team for deciding to revive Uncha Lamba Kad. Their belief in the song and its legacy means a lot to me," he says.

He frames the enduring association with Akshay Kumar in terms of shared intention. "Whenever everyone comes together with the intent of creating something entertaining and memorable, magic happens. I think it comes down to mutual trust and a belief in good music."

As for hearing his composition return in a new avatar while retaining its original flavour? "It felt nostalgic and exciting at the same time," he says. "Almost magical."

Some songs, it turns out, are built for more than one lifetime.
