From Engineering Halls to Concert Halls: The Unexpected Origin Stories of India's Biggest Music Stars

They didn't follow the script. No childhood conservatories, no film-family connections, no straight-line path from dream to stage. Yet today, these six artists are among the most recognizable voices in Indian music - and their journeys to get there are anything but ordinary.

Darshan Raval walked away from an engineering degree to chase something far less certain: a career built entirely on feeling. It paid off. The man who once sat in lecture halls solving equations now owns the title of India's go-to romantic voice, with back-to-back hits like Morni, Saathiya, Chogada, and Kamariya making him a fixture on every playlist worth its shuffle.

Laqshay Kapoor was running a furniture export business before Bollywood ever heard his name. While negotiating deals and managing shipments, he was quietly nurturing a passion that had nothing to do with timber or trade. That patience eventually paid dividends - today, tracks like Dil Se Dil Tak, Deedar Hua, and Ranjhana prove that sometimes the boardroom is just a detour to the recording studio.

Vedang Raina may be best known for his acting, but music came first. Raised in a Kashmiri business family, he picked up the guitar long before he ever considered facing a camera. The acting career followed. The music never left.

Jubin Nautiyal didn't wait long to show where his heart was. Born into a business family in Dehradun, he was drawn to music at the age of four - picking up the thread from a father who loved to sing. He left mainstream schooling after 8th grade to formally study music, grounding himself in classical training before the industry ever had a chance to call his name.

Stebin Ben made up his mind early. Growing up in a middle-class family in Bhopal, he knew school was a stopover, not a destination. He dutifully earned a civil engineering degree - then packed his bags, moved to Mumbai in 2017, and never looked back. The gamble held.

King was a national-level athlete before he was a rapper. The Uttar Pradesh-born artist spent four years competing for the national under-20 team in college - then quietly dropped out to bet on a different kind of hustle. He started his musical journey in 2012 through a YouTube channel called King Rocco, building his audience one track at a time, long before mainstream India caught up.

What ties these six together isn't genre or geography - it's the stubborn refusal to let an unexpected starting point become the final word. Engineers, exporters, athletes, and actors: in Indian music today, the detour often turns out to be the whole point.
