A Unique Confluence of Poetry and Melody: Javed Akhtar and Mohammed Vakil Unveil New Ghazal ‘Bazahir Kya Hai’
Javed Akhtar’s poetry meets Mohammed Vakil’s raga-based vocals in ‘Bazahir Kya Hai’, a new ghazal from the album ‘Hamare Shauq Ki’, releasing on Goongoonalo.
There are few things as rare as watching a master lyricist’s words find exactly the right voice. That rare alchemy is now on display in “Bazahir Kya Hai,” a new ghazal that brings together Padma Bhushan-winning writer Javed Akhtar and acclaimed vocalist Mohammed Vakil, releasing on the music platform Goongoonalo.
The ghazal is part of a larger album titled “Hamare Shauq Ki,” and its central theme feels particularly relevant to the times: the gap between how things appear and how they actually feel on the inside. It’s a classic ghazal preoccupation-outward glamour versus genuine, inward contentment-filtered through Akhtar’s characteristically precise and unsentimental pen.
Giving that poetry its musical form fell to Mohammed Vakil, who has spent decades building a reputation as a raga-based ghazal singer unafraid to let contemporary textures into a traditional framework. For “Bazahir Kya Hai,” he’s woven together the classical Indian idiom with touches of Western composition, an approach meant to let the ghazal speak to older connoisseurs and newer, younger ears alike without diluting its emotional core.
