Inside Backstage Beauty Collective: London Entrepreneur Shabana Subhani on Redefining an Industry from the Wings

There's a version of the beauty industry that lives in front of the camera - polished, filtered, ready for the runway. And then there's the version Shabana Subhani has spent her career in: backstage, under pressure, where the real work of a fashion show actually happens.

The London-based entrepreneur is the founder and creative director of Backstage Beauty Collective (BBC), a platform she describes not as a makeup agency but as a creative ecosystem - one built on structure, leadership and, above all, people. And she didn't start it with a business plan. Her journey evolved naturally across beauty, fashion, content and creative direction, and it was watching backstage beauty up close that shaped how BBC came to be.

A Business Born From Observation, Not Ambition

Subhani's path into entrepreneurship wasn't a straight line, and she doesn't pretend it was. Years of working across beauty, fashion and content creation gave her a front-row seat to an industry that often runs on chaos - talented artists working under tight deadlines, with little time and even less structure.

"Great backstage beauty requires much more than technical skill," she says. "It needs leadership, communication, preparation, teamwork and an environment where people feel respected and valued."

That realization became the foundation for BBC - a business built not just to deliver flawless makeup, but to bring order, direction and community to an industry that rarely gets to see itself that way.

Starting Over in Her Forties

What makes Subhani's story stand out isn't just what she built - it's when she built it. She launched Backstage Beauty Collective in her forties, after already living through several chapters as a woman, a mother, a creative and a content creator.

"Starting something new in my forties taught me that ambition doesn't have an expiry date," she explains. "You don't have to have everything figured out at 25 or follow somebody else's timeline."

It's a message she returns to throughout her interview - that experience, not youth, is what gave her the clarity to finally understand what she wanted to build, and why.

Beyond Makeup: Building an Industry Standard

Under Subhani's direction, BBC has worked on large-scale productions, including serving as Beauty Creative Lead for Asian Bridal Fest UK 2026 - a show involving roughly 40 models, multiple designers and a full team of beauty professionals. The experience, she says, sharpened her understanding of what real creative direction demands: coordination, communication and the ability to hold a team together under pressure.

She's also taken BBC beyond production, launching the brand's first Runway Beauty Masterclass in London in collaboration with Modest Fashion Week London - an initiative aimed at giving industry professionals and emerging creatives an honest look at what happens beyond the makeup chair.

Her work hasn't gone unnoticed outside the beauty world either. In 2026, Subhani received the Best London Influencer & Blogger recognition at the Chaand Raat celebrations and was later nominated for Creative Director & Beauty Innovator of the Year, alongside an invitation to the House of Lords for events celebrating women in business and creativity.

A Philosophy Built on "Collective," Not "Individual"

Ask Subhani what sets BBC apart, and she doesn't talk about technique - she talks about culture. The name itself, she says, is deliberate.

"I don't believe another person's success takes anything away from mine," she says. "That's why the word 'Collective' matters so much to me. It's about bringing different talents together and creating an environment where everyone contributes to a bigger vision."

It's a philosophy that extends to how she mentors emerging artists, many of whom, she says, deserve space to learn and grow alongside established professionals - not compete against them.

What's Next for Backstage Beauty Collective

Subhani's ambitions for BBC go well beyond backstage beauty direction. She envisions the platform expanding across fashion weeks and creative productions internationally, while deepening its education arm through more masterclasses, workshops and mentoring programs.

But scale, she's clear, isn't the end goal. "Growth for me isn't simply about doing more shows or becoming bigger," she says. "It's about becoming better, more established and more valuable to the people and productions we work with."

Her Message to Readers

For a woman who rebuilt her career and identity in her forties, Subhani's parting words feel less like advice and more like permission.

"Don't underestimate what can still begin," she says. "Sometimes the chapter that changes you begins much later than you expected... I'm simply building the next chapter, one opportunity, one lesson and one brave decision at a time."
