Bread, Bollywood & Beyond: Anushka Purohit Is Building an Empire One Unlikely Idea at a Time

Known in film circles for bringing Bollywood to Hong Kong, Anushka Purohit is just getting started.

The Women Entrepreneur Who Finds Opportunity in the Overlooked

Most entrepreneurs spend years chasing a single idea. Anushka Purohit spends hers finding the gaps everyone else walked past. It started with beer made from old bread. Breer, her craft beer brand, was an unlikely enough premise that it made people stop and pay attention - which was precisely the point. Leftover loaves from bakeries and sandwich shops, destined for the bin, became the base ingredient for something drinkable, marketable, and genuinely sustainable. It was quirky. It worked. And more than anything, it revealed how Purohit's mind operates: find what's being wasted or ignored, and ask what it could become.

From One Idea to Three: A Portfolio Built on Instinct

That instinct hasn't slowed down since.

These days, Anushka is running not one but three ventures simultaneously, each operating in a completely different world. Through AA Technologies, built alongside co-founder Aarnav Gupta, she has been quietly rethinking how Bollywood reaches audiences in Hong Kong - bypassing the usual distribution chain entirely and working directly with cinemas to bring Indian films to a community that had been largely overlooked. It's an unglamorous, structural fix to a real cultural problem, and it's working.

Grid: The Events App With a Bigger Idea Behind It

Then there's Grid. If Breer was a proof of concept and AA Tech is a distribution play, Grid is the big swing. The events app, which Purohit is building with a team that includes Chirag Sen, Balaji Sharma, and Akshay Kadam, launched in December 2025. Since launch, Grid has powered 50+ events across markets including India, Singapore, Hong Kong, and the United States, while building a growing mobile user base of over 8,000+ across iOS and Android.

The Honour: Recognition That Tracks With the Ambition

The recognition has followed. Purohit is a Forbes 30 Under 30 honoree and a Tatler Gen T listee, two distinctions that carry real weight in Asia's startup ecosystem. She was awarded at the House of Lords in London as part of the Indians of the World recognition, and reached the finals of the Hult Prize, the student competition known for attracting some of the sharpest young minds tackling global problems.

She was also, for what it's worth, the first young female brewer in Hong Kong - not a milestone she set out to claim, but one that quietly says something about the spaces she tends to walk into.

Her Advice: Stop Waiting, Start Connecting

Asked what she'd tell people still waiting for the right moment, Purohit doesn't hesitate. "It's never too late to do what you love. Grab every moment and live it to its fullest - and don't underestimate your network. Connect with people you look up to, learn from them. Those lessons are never wasted." For someone who built a beer brand out of old bread, it sounds about right.
