Sheena Chohan Channels Raja Ravi Varma's Shakuntala in a Stunning Ode to Timeless Indian Womanhood

Some paintings never really leave the canvas - they just wait for someone to bring them back to life. That's exactly what actress Sheena Chohan has done with a new photoshoot inspired by Raja Ravi Varma's legendary depiction of Shakuntala, one of Indian mythology's most beloved heroines.

Rather than recreating the painting frame for frame, Sheena's shoot captures the spirit of the character - her innocence, quiet strength, and emotional depth - set against a heritage-style backdrop of stone arches, still water, and greenery that instantly transports viewers to another era.

The styling stays true to Shakuntala's classic aesthetic: a pristine white saree bordered in soft pink and gold, flowing open hair, subtle traditional makeup, a small bindi, and delicate floral jewellery. Barefoot beside the water with a lotus cradled in her hands, Sheena embodies a gentle, unhurried femininity that feels both ancient and immediate.

What separates this shoot from a simple costume tribute, though, is intent. Sheena wasn't interested in just looking the part - she wanted to understand Shakuntala as a woman first, myth second.

"What fascinated me about Shakuntala was not just her beauty or her love story, but her transformation. She begins as a simple, innocent woman, yet her journey holds so much elegance, emotion, and strength. I wanted to explore the woman behind the myth and imagine what Shakuntala might feel like if she were a woman of our time," Sheena shares.

The shoot was captured at Evolve Back Hampi by photographer Prasad H.M., with editing by Vaibhav Venu Gopal Vernekar and styling by Veena Shankar. A short reel from the shoot is already making the rounds on Instagram, offering fans a glimpse of the quiet, contemplative energy Sheena brings to the frames - particularly in the moments where she sits beside the water, lost in thought, lotus in hand.

"I love exploring stories, art, and women who have inspired generations. I'm particularly drawn to mythologically rooted Indian stories and characters because they carry so much history, emotion, beauty, and relevance. With Shakuntala, I wanted to pay tribute to that legacy while giving her a new voice. Her world may belong to another era, but the emotions she represents are still very much ours," she adds.

It's this instinct - to treat every shoot as a character study rather than just a visual exercise - that continues to define Sheena's work.
