Priyanka Chopra Jonas Backs Hunkkaar: The Roar, Calls It a Story Told “With Honesty and Conviction”

Priyanka Chopra Jonas has never been shy about what draws her to a project as a producer - and her latest backing, the JioHotstar series Hunkkaar: The Roar, fits squarely into that pattern. As executive producer through her banner Purple Pebble Pictures, Chopra Jonas is once again lending her name to a story built around difficult, socially charged subject matter rather than easy entertainment.

“I’m always drawn to stories that have depth and meaning, and Hunkkaar: The Roar is one such story,” Chopra Jonas said of the series, which tackles themes of power, belief and justice. “It takes on a deeply sensitive subject and tells the story with honesty and conviction. I have immense respect for Nitya and Karan, Applause and the entire team for the thought and care they’ve brought to this project. I’m proud that Purple Pebble Pictures could be part of this journey.”

The series centers on Meenu Rawat, a 17-year-old who accuses a powerful spiritual leader of sexual assault - a case that spirals into national attention and forces a reckoning with the institutions built to protect power rather than victims. It’s directed by a trio - Karan D. Kapadia, Nitya Mehra and Heeraz Marfatia - and produced by Birla Studios and Applause Entertainment in association with Purple Pebble Pictures, under a Mangata Films banner. The show premiered on JioHotstar on September 25, 2026.

For Chopra Jonas, the project is less an anomaly than a continuation. Purple Pebble Pictures was founded on the idea that producing isn’t just about financing - it’s about opening doors for storytellers who might otherwise struggle to get a hearing. “At Purple Pebble Pictures, we want to tell good stories, give new talent a chance and provide the audience with an entertaining experience,” she has said of the company’s guiding principle.

That principle has translated into a slate that ranges well beyond Bollywood convention. The company backed the Marathi film Paani, which went on to win the National Film Award for Best Film on Environment Conservation and Preservation, and has supported titles including Ventilator, Firebrand and The White Tiger. Its reach has also landed on the world’s biggest stage: Chopra Jonas executive-produced the Oscar-nominated documentary To Kill a Tiger and the Oscar-nominated short film Anuja - the latter marking Purple Pebble Pictures’ third Oscar nomination, following The White Tiger and To Kill a Tiger.

Seen against that backdrop, Hunkkaar: The Roar reads less like a one-off and more like the next entry in a deliberate pattern - one where Chopra Jonas gravitates toward filmmakers with a strong, specific point of view and stories rooted in real, often uncomfortable, realities. The hope, as with her earlier projects, is that a narrative anchored in a particular context can still land with audiences well beyond it.

With Hunkkaar: The Roar now streaming, Chopra Jonas’s producing footprint continues to expand across formats and languages, but the throughline stays consistent: back the people with something to say, and get out of the way long enough for them to say it.
