When reports surfaced claiming Akshay Kumar pocketed a modest Rs 1.7 crore for his upcoming comedy Welcome To The Jungle, the internet did what it always does - it ran with the number. But at the film's trailer launch, Akshay wasn't just there to correct the figure. He was there to tell a different story altogether.
"Whoever said that I charged Rs 1.7 crore - I didn't even take that much. I didn't even get that much," the actor said, batting away the speculation with characteristic bluntness. No drama, no outrage. Just a quick correction, and then something far more revealing.
Because for Akshay, the real reason he signed on to this film had nothing to do with a paycheque.
"These Three People Have Taught Me A Lot"
The moment the fee question was out of the way, Akshay turned the spotlight somewhere else entirely - to the late writer-director Neeraj Vora, the man behind the film's story.
"The most important thing was the story of this film, written by Neeraj Vora," he said. "In my interviews, I have always said that I have learned a lot in comedy from Priyadarshan Ji, Rajkumar Santoshi, and Neeraj Vora. These three people have taught me a lot in my life."
It's a rare thing, in an industry obsessed with box office numbers and billing hierarchies, to hear a star of Akshay Kumar's stature publicly credit the architects of his craft by name - and mean it. Neeraj Vora, who passed away in 2017 after a prolonged illness, left behind a legacy deeply woven into Bollywood's comedy DNA. That Akshay considers his story reason enough to show up speaks volumes.
36 Years and Still Going
Then there's Firoz Nadiadwala - producer, collaborator, and by Akshay's own account, a man he has known for 36 years.
"I still remember the struggle I used to do with him. And I am still struggling with him," Akshay said, breaking into a laugh.
It's the kind of line that lands differently when you know the history. Theirs is a relationship forged long before the blockbusters, back when both men were still finding their footing in a brutally competitive industry. That they're still in the trenches together - still making films, still laughing about it - says something about the kind of loyalty that doesn't show up on a balance sheet.
In a film industry that can be as cold as it is glamorous, Akshay Kumar keeps making the same quiet statement: that some things - a mentor's legacy, a decades-old friendship - are simply worth more than the asking price.
