R. Madhavan's 'GDN' Refuses to Slow Down, Packs Theatres Four Weeks In

Most films see their theatre footfalls dwindle within a fortnight of release. R. Madhavan's GDN is bucking that trend entirely.

Four weeks after it hit screens on August 7, the biographical drama is still pulling in audiences - a rare feat in an industry where box office momentum typically fades fast. The film traces the life and inventive genius of G.D. Naidu, a pioneering figure in Indian engineering and industry, with Madhavan not only playing the titular role but also stepping in as co-producer.

What's kept GDN alive at the box office, industry trackers say, is old-fashioned word of mouth. The film first found its footing with families, working professionals and older moviegoers who responded warmly to its story. Now, weeks later, a new wave of viewers - school and college students - is showing up in theatres, suggesting the film's appeal has broadened rather than tapered off.

For Madhavan, that's precisely the point. He has spoken about wanting GDN to introduce G.D. Naidu's story to viewers across age groups, and the film's sustained run suggests that ambition is paying off.

GDN is directed by Krishnakumar Ramkumar and produced under the Varghese Moolan Pictures and Tricolour Films banners. The film is also set for a Netflix premiere, which is expected to carry Naidu's story to audiences well beyond Indian theatres.
