Mishkat Verma on Tu Ya Koi Nahin: "Playing a Double Role is Rare, Every Actor Craves It"

Mishkat Verma is no stranger to the screen, but his latest outing is asking viewers to look at him in a whole new light. The actor plays Ansh in Ishika Shahi's Tu Ya Koi Nahin, a fresh offering streaming on the Director's Kut Production YouTube channel. Interestingly, Verma admits he wasn't immediately convinced he was right for the part - it took some persuading from Ishika and veteran producer Rajan Shahi before he came on board.

"When Ishika and Rajan sir first approached me, Ishika narrated the story, and my first reaction was to ask if she was sure she wanted me for this role - Ansh, especially, was completely new territory for me," he recalled. "I even asked for an audition before they cast me, but they were confident about their choice. After that, saying yes was a no-brainer. A double role doesn't come around often, and it's something most actors dream of. People don't usually picture me playing someone like Ansh, so I was glad someone finally did."

Playing two characters in one story means living inside two very different headspaces, and Verma is quick to separate them. "Ansh is passionate, fearless, fiercely loyal. Yash is loyal too, but he's also funny and innocent. They're poles apart in personality, which is exactly what made playing both of them so exciting - and challenging."

Ask him what the show is really about beneath its title, and he doesn't hesitate. "At its heart, this is a story about unconditional love - putting the person you love above yourself, no matter the circumstance, and going to any length for them. That emotional core is what really drives everything."

Moving from television to a digital production also changed the texture of his everyday work, he says. "It was a completely different experience from television. On TV, there are usually restrictions on how characters - especially leads - can behave. Here, we had complete creative freedom. There was no telecast pressure, and every scene was shot with real care and attention to detail. It's a contemporary show, and that's what sets it apart."

That creative freedom, however, also pushed him into emotionally demanding territory. "There were several scenes that took me out of my comfort zone. Without giving anything away, there's one moment where Yash goes through something intensely emotional - that scene really tested my limits as an actor. I owe a lot to my director, Rishi sir, who was endlessly patient and kept pushing me until we got it right."

On the subject of on-screen chemistry - often described as something that just happens - Verma offers a more grounded take. "I think chemistry mostly comes from the writing. If the script is strong, that's where it really begins. Of course, the comfort between co-actors matters too."

"Priyanshi and I worked really well together. There was no friction between us - we were both open to each other's ideas, which made things effortless. Honestly, it was a breeze working with her," he added.

Much of the show's distinct flavour, he believes, comes down to its director. "What struck me about Ishika was her sheer, relentless passion - more than I expected, honestly. The energy and commitment she brought to this project will come through on screen. She may have inherited some of it from her father, but she's taken it several notches further. Her passion showed in every single department."

As for convincing audiences to tune in, Verma keeps it simple: "Just watch it with an open mind, and be ready for the unexpected. It's not your typical love story, and that's exactly what makes it worth watching. The atmosphere on set - with Rishi sir, Ishika, Gulshan sir, and the whole team - was so open and supportive, and I think that energy comes through in the show too."
