For nearly a week, one question had been circulating across fashion desks and fan forums with unusual urgency: would she come? When L'Oréal Paris failed to include Aishwarya Rai Bachchan in its initial promotional materials at the Hotel Martinez, speculation reached fever pitch. Then, in the early hours of Friday, May 22, a video emerged of the actress boarding a flight from Mumbai with her daughter Aaradhya. The question was answered.

By the time she descended a grand staircase in a sweeping sapphire-blue couture gown, the footage had already spread across social media within minutes - garnering millions of views before official photographs had even been released. After more than two decades of commanding the Croisette, Aishwarya had done what she always does: arrived on her own terms, and arrived spectacularly.

The Gown: Luminara by Amit Aggarwal

The centrepiece of the moment was the Luminara - a custom couture commission by Delhi-based designer Amit Aggarwal, who made his own Cannes debut with this very piece, styled by Mohit Rai. The gown is built around a singular creative conceit: light not merely as illumination, but as energy, movement, and force, translated through sculptural construction and engineered craftsmanship.

It features Aggarwal's signature Crystal Vein embroidery technique, developed over more than 1,500 hours of meticulous handwork. The body-hugging silhouette is covered in intricate sequinned detailing with wave-like embellishments running across the fabric, creating a metallic, sculpted effect. The gown features a plunging neckline, structured feathery shoulder accents, and a lower half that flares into a classic mermaid silhouette. Long flowing drapes attached at the arms created a cape-like effect that moved dramatically as she descended the staircase. 

Speaking about the collaboration, Aggarwal said: "Aishwarya has always approached Cannes with a strong sense of individuality and evolution. With Luminara, Mohit and I wanted to create something that felt less like a garment and more like an energy field around her."

Beauty and Jewellery: Restrained Glamour

Aishwarya kept her beauty game effortlessly classic, letting the dramatic gown do the talking. She went heavy on the lashes with broad black eyeliner, wore a good amount of blush, and opted for a pink glossy lip, styling her hair in side-parted open waves. Diamond and sapphire-embellished jewellery - a choker neckpiece, dainty matching earrings, and sparkly finger rings  completed the royal look.

On the Red Carpet

She posed on the red carpet with Eva Longoria, her longtime friend and fellow L'Oréal global brand ambassador, before attending the screening of Palme d'Or contender The Birthday Party (Histoires de la Nuit), starring Monica Bellucci. She blew kisses, greeted the waiting paparazzi with a namaste, and made finger hearts for the cameras.

Twenty-Four Years on the Croisette

Aishwarya first appeared at Cannes in 2002 for the premiere of Devdas, alongside Shah Rukh Khan and filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali. A year later, she returned as a global ambassador for L'Oréal Paris - a role she has held without interruption ever since.

Her 2026 appearance comes after a period of relative professional quiet. She was last seen on screen in Mani Ratnam's Tamil epic Ponniyin Selvan: Part Two (2023). This year she arrived not with a film to promote, but with something more powerful: a legacy to reaffirm. The Luminara gown, in that light, reads less as a fashion choice and more as a declaration. The Queen of Cannes has not abdicated. She was simply waiting for the right entrance.
